The Lottery

By Heather

What would you do if you won the lottery. I mean really won. Imagine you won some absurd amount of money. I realized something today. What I would be the most excited about having won the lottery, was not what bills I could pay off, where I could go, or what I could buy. But I would be most excited about the fact that I'd be able to spend my entire day with Ryan. Its what I look forward to at five o'clock every day. Don't get me wrong I'd probably burn through a lot of cash at first just for the hell of it. Then I'd be smart with the bulk of it. Sure I could go to Hawaii, but if I don't have Ryan with me its not even worth it.

First of all, I think I'd panic. There'd definitely be a fair few hours spent locked in a dark room, wringing my hands and muttering "Don't panic" to myself. Because I would panic. Being made a millionaire overnight would open up all kinds of possibilities, but common sense would tell me that it wouldn't all be sunshine and butterflies. Winning big on the Lottery often attracts the kind of attention you'd really rather avoid.

But, when I'd got my act together, I'd figure out the sum of money that I could reasonably expect to guarantee me financial security for life, then put it away. And I wouldn't touch it unless there was an emergency. Then I'd pay off my mortgage. I'm very grateful for that mortgage, don't get me wrong, but a debt is a debt, and if I could pay it off tomorrow, I would.

My extravagances would probably be travel, and the latest PlayStation, whenever it came out. I love travel and I love gaming, and I'd like to do more of both. But aside from that, I don't know what I'd use the money for. I'd want to help my family and friends with their dreams or their problems if they needed/wanted help, but aside from that, I think the money would stay in the bank. I've no desire now for a private jet or my own bowling alley, so there's no reason why I should have either of them after a big Lottery win.

Oh I have a plan for it if I got it. Say I won a massive amount of money. I would probably panic like you said because that is A LOT of money. I would first off take the cash option and divide that up among my immidiate family members, just to bring it down to a number that I can come to grips with. I'd get an accountant and find out how to make that money last, invest it in all the right places so we could live off the interest alone. Build a house. Nothing giant or anything. I'd like to have a fair amount of land to play with in the country and build the house on. And I just want a simple house, nothing extravagent. Maybe have a couple horses on the property. And then just put the rest away. Go on vacation when we want, go camping when we want, persue goals and dreams. I don't want to own a summer home anywhere or anything.

As for getting unwanted attention. Anyone that gets a hold of me saying that if I don't give them millions of dollars they'll blow their brains out well they can go ahead and do it, thin out the gene pool. If they're trying to prey on my sympathies they're asking the wrong person. I've worked a hard days job, I do day in and day out and probably will to the day I die. I have a profound respect for the people that work with their hands like I do. I do not ask for hand outs and I do not give hand outs.
